Welcome to the Department of Physics
The Department of Physics, established in 1952, has a long-standing tradition of academic excellence and innovation. The postgraduate programme was introduced in 1964, and today the department offers a wide range of programmes, including a six-semester undergraduate degree, an eight-semester Honours programme, Honours with Research, and a four-semester postgraduate degree in Physics.
The department is supported by fully functional and well-equipped laboratories. Its research wing, the Centre for Advanced Research in Physical Sciences (CARPS), has been a recognized research centre of the University of Kerala since 2013. The department actively engages in collaborative research and academic partnerships with reputed research institutions and industries.
Our curriculum is designed to be dynamic and future-oriented, incorporating research-level projects, industrial visits, and skill-oriented training programmes. We emphasize activity-based, student-centred learning to ensure a strong conceptual foundation along with practical expertise. The department boasts excellent infrastructure, including dedicated and modern laboratories for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and research scholars. Our faculty members are experts in diverse fields such as Electronics, Materials Science, Radiation Physics, and Astrophysics, and they employ innovative ICT-enabled teaching methods to enhance learning.
The faculty consistently contributes to high-quality research, with publications in reputed Scopus-indexed journals, reflecting the department’s strong research culture. We also maintain productive partnerships with leading institutions and industries, offering students valuable opportunities for internships and project work. The department welcomes students from other institutions to utilize its advanced research facilities for their academic projects.
We offer interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary courses, along with skill-enhancement and value-added programmes, enabling students to integrate Physics with other domains and adapt to emerging career opportunities.
